I completely agree with you, Yelp is great for customers...lousy for paying businesses.
I pay about $50 per click with Yelp and they have no way of showing me proof of how many impressions I am getting. Non paying customers can get better results just with positive reviews. Yelp paid advertising is the absolute lowest "bang for your buck" out there. Google cpc, Bing, Supermedia, Yahoo and Facebook are well worth the much lower click charge...yelp..not so much.
Why would someone want to pay Yelp advertising when they could just solicit reviews from their happy customers...(although this is against yelp guidelines and there is obviously no way for their software to track this) and get way more page views and clicks.
Try asking Yelp to show you proof of the impressions you are supposed to get (in our case, 600 per month) and they simply tell you," legally we have to give you what we promise, we wouldn't be in business if we didn't give you what you paid for".....show me the money, I want to see it on an impression report if I'm paying for it!! Google does, Supermedia does, Facebook does, Bing does, everybody else does.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Matt, for posting this. Google AdWords hasn't worked well for me. Neither has an SEO company I hired for one year (Compass). So the question becomes, what does work and is cost-effective?
